Gingerbread - 8th December 2011

Charlie had a little girl come around to tea today so it was only fitting that we should have a tea party and what else would you make in December other than gingerbread. I'm pleased to say that Charlie and his little friend were completely adorable mini chefs and totally wonderful at the whole process. It was just a shame that Josie was feeling poorly and was asleep in bed.

Gingerbread recipe

250g Plain flour
1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda
1.5 tsp of ground ginger
175 g soft brown sugar
100g butter
1 medium egg
4 tbs golden syrup

(Two beautiful little children and a mass of sweets, edible glitter and pink icing are all optional but worth adding)

Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and butter and rub into breadcrumbs. Add the sugar, egg and golden syrup and mix to a dough.

Get a bowl of flour, a rolling pin and a whole load of cutters and leave the little ones to it. If you do employ a child like Charlie, do supervise as they will eat the flour and dough by the handful, even if you are watching.

Whilst the gingerbread is cooking in the oven for about 12 minutes at 180c and then cooling on a wire tree, it is a good idea to make a little bit of popcorn for your hungry helpers.

The Pink Ladies

As we sat in our classroom inspired horseshoe, designed to encourage conversation, there was a slightly uneasy silence. Those of us who knew each other, stole furtive glances, others returned our smiles politely although they were not privy to the planning and discussion that had occurred in preparation for the evening. Granny square Christmas

When I was younger I fell in love with the granny square blanket my Nan had made. It was in her tiny little Welsh cottage near the mountains and was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. So many colours and combinations of colours, it was just truly amazing. I'm not sure if it's the happy childhood memories or my ever increasing passion for crocheting, but granny squares (and doilies) are something I could fill me life with. Even more delightful are the variations on granny squares. Star burst blanket, which used to be my favourite, but I have recently had a go at African flowers.
